Iphone 4 “Facetime”
If you want to do a FaceTime chat with someone, you have to both have shiny new iPhone 4’s and you both have to be connected to WiFi. You can share almost live video chat with other person from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi.
As buyers of the new phone have learned with some dismay, there really aren’t that many people to they can video chat with.
Testing the feature
If you don’t have any relative or friend with Ip4 then you can call all 1-888-FACETIME anytime from 8am to 8pm CDT, and you can chat with a random Apple rep over FaceTime. It will show you how it works.
Limitations :
- IP 4 to IP 4
- Video Calls are Free, but Limited
- For households where one iPhone is upgraded while the other is handed down, FaceTime is a non-starter.
- Those two iPhone owners can’t video call one another because older iPhones can’t run the FaceTime application.
- FaceTime is a Wi-Fi only application
There is trick posted on blog.deviceknit.com which shows how to use this facetime feature without wifi connection. It is not a hack it is just a work around. But in it you have to carry your laptop with it.

First, you’ll need to have tethering on your iPhone plan. It’s been tested with AT&T so far, which runs an extra $15 per month (until there’s a jailbreak that allows it for free!)
Turn on tethering in Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering on your iPhone 4 and connect it via USB. You’ll see a new “iPhone USB” connection option pop up in the Network preference pane in System Preferences:
Go to the Sharing preference pane, and turn on Internet Sharing to share your USB connection over WiFi/AirPort:
Now, connect to the network you just created with your iPhone, and you can FaceTime all you want
