One option is to reinstall the chipset drivers … However, there is a chance that it is a problem in motherboard, in which case I would call Dell (if you have a warranty), or looking for a replacement on eBay or something.
Boot “Safe Mode (press F8 right when the bar stating Windows is loading will appear at the bottom of the screen).
These buttons can have their own drivers, or can be associated with ‘live’ application driver. Anyway, go to support.dell.com and enter your service tag and look for the latest drivers for these things. Also make sure you have the latest BIOS.
If none of these works and Dell to call (assuming you’re still under warranty), make sure to give them everything you did.
Update the sound drivers
Might be vista problem you might want to reinstall operating system.Once Vista system is fully operational, it will now allow the Media direct button to response without delay

I think Dell offers an update utility, run it. If they don’t, check the website for the drivers for your computer.

You will need to download and install the Dell Quickset Application located here:=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2861&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=8&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=25&fileid=174171
After this is installed the audio buttons on your system will work again.
I hope this helps.
